Mufflers – Truck Parts to Please your Ears
Mufflers, as you can probably guess from the name, are designed to dampen, or reduce, noise emitting from a truck. To understand how these truck parts do their jobs, it's important to first understand why they have a job to do at all.
Where is the sound coming from?
A standard internal combustion engine on a truck produces exhaust gases from the used fuel. When these gases pass from the high pressure area of the engine to the mid-pressure area of the exhaust, it creates a whole lot of sound waves, which means a whole lot of noise.
Now, as much as you may love the intense sound your truck makes as you surmount that huge boulder or propel through the mud, you have to take into consideration how much you drive on the road as well, because you can create quite the noise disturbance in residential and commercial areas. The great thing about these truck parts is that they don't just muffle the noise – they actually eliminate all of the noises that are most unpleasant to the human ear, allowing only the pleasing, powerful sounds to go through.
How exactly does this truck part lessen noise?
As the sound waves leave the exhaust, they enter a series of tubes within the muffler. The basic components of a muffler are:
- Resonator chamber
- Tubes
- Inlet
- Outlet
The magic really happens in the resonator chamber. There is only a small hole that allows access to the resonator chamber, so some of the sound waves pass through it and some bounce off of the surrounding wall. The sound waves that don't make it through bounce off of the back wall and come back for a second try. Because they have bounced off multiple surfaces, these sound waves have become low pressure. When they reach the hole, they come up against the sound waves that did make it through and have bounced off the opposing wall. Because they have only bounced off one wall, they remain high pressure. When these conflicting waves meet, they cancel each other out, dampening the noise as it finally makes its way out of the system.
Even if you prefer a louder sound, it's still important to get these truck parts to eliminate any undesirable noise. The great thing is that there are all different kinds of mufflers, so you can get one that emits just the right amount of sound for your truck.
